At Home — Online FAQ

NZIFF will present its annual programme in an online format for the very first time in 2020.

When does NZIFF 2020 At Home — Online happen?

NZIFF At Home — Online takes place from 24 July to 2 August. You can read more about the announcement here.

How will I access it?

Full details about the NZIFF At Home — Online platform will be released on 22 June. You will be able to access the platform through the NZIFF website and we will be making sure instructions are clear and will have help available to make sure everything is working for you to enjoy the film festival at home on your Smart TV, your laptop or desktop computer, or mobile tablet.

What films will be screened?

We are curating the programme now and will be announcing the line-up on Monday 22 June. All films, apart from any specific retro film programmes, will be New Zealand premieres and we are excited to also include a selection of world premieres.

Will you be producing a programme catalogue?

Yes, we will be producing a digital programme for the NZIFF At Home — Online which will be available to download from our website from Monday 22 June.

How will I know when the films are on?

As with our usual film festival, we will be producing a daily schedule of the films. Some films will be special one night only screenings at a specified time (including our opening and closing night films). Others will be made available for a seven-day period, and once rented online, will be activated for you to view within a 48-hour window.

Do I need to buy a ‘ticket’ and how much will it cost?

You will purchase a ‘ticket’ for the NZIFF At Home – Online films. Further details about ticket options and cost will be announced soon. As is NZIFF's policy, box office earnings are shared with filmmakers and we are committed to looking after our artists.

Will this be available outside New Zealand?

No. NZIFF At Home — Online is only available to New Zealand audiences. Sorry, Australia!

Will there still be New Zealand’s Best short film competition?

Yes. We are delighted to confirm that New Zealand’s Best short film competition will be a part of NZIFF At Home — Online. We are already assessing the entries to date and will be announcing our Guest Selector very soon. We will have an Audience Award and will be confirming the voting mechanism closer to the time.

What about other events which normally take place during the film festival?

NZIFF At Home — Online will be different to the in-cinema experience and we will miss the chance to rub shoulders with other filmgoers and robustly debate the merits of each film in the foyers. But NZIFF At Home — Online will be more than just a chance to stream great films – we are working hard to create a full festival experience with virtual red carpet, filmmaker introductions and Q&As, as well as masterclasses. In fact, given the nature of the online environment, it’s likely we will be able to include more filmmakers than ever in this year’s festival. We hope to even have an online form of the annual Film Quiz.

How does this differ from other films available free on YouTube and elsewhere?

The films included in NZIFF At Home — Online will be New Zealand premieres, and in some cases world premieres. We are carefully curating a programme to ensure the best experience possible. Many of the films which will be screened in NZIFF At Home — Online will not be screened at any other time in New Zealand.
