I Am a Sex Addict 2005
Filmmaker Caveh Zahedi’s persistent itch for anonymous, totally commitment-free sex is fatally paired with a need to confess his peccadilloes – ideally to an understanding, totally committed girlfriend. Failing that, he’s prepared to make sport of his shame for the edification of any of us willing to pay for a film called I Am a Sex Addict. An amusingly sheepish exhibitionist of his own perversity, Zahedi makes an unexpectedly good case for his addiction as a male mental health issue in need of an airing.
“The film is Zahedi’s account of some 20 years struggling with his fetish for prostitutes, an obsession that destroyed his relationships with three women. Zahedi’s engagingly neurotic screen presence, both in his narration to camera and in his dramatic re-enactments, makes for a likeable comic persona that keeps audiences hooked even when we shudder at his indiscretions… Wittily making a virtue of its budgetary restraints, the film artfully treads a delicate line between flippancy and soul-baring seriousness.” — Jonathan Romney, Screendaily
