On Thursday 4th August the indigenous film We Are Still Here had its New Zealand Premiere at Auckland's The Civic. The amazing film was followed by a Q+A with directors Beck Cole, Danielle MacLean, Dena Curtis, Tim Worrall, Richard Curtis, Miki Magasiva, Mario Gaoa, Chantelle Burgoyne, Tracey Rigney, Renae Maihi. We enjoyed sitting, listening, and witness this movie, and the incredible filmmakers who made it. Photos by Veronica McLaughlin.

On Friday 29th July and Saturday 6th August Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song screened at Auckland's the Civic. A Q+A with directors Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine followed the 6th August screening. Also on Saturday 6th August, Dan and Dayna lead a Masterclass for filmmakers in Auckland, in the The Civic's Wintergarden. Dan and Dayna took eager filmmakers inside their craft and uncovered how their filmmaking process shifted from project to project. Photos by Veronica McLaughlin.

On Friday 5th August at Hollywood Avondale we screened the Auckland Premiere of Ka Pō directed by Etienne Aurelius. Ka Pō was introduced by our very own Auckland intern Thomas Giblin and Ka Pō producer Chelsea Winstanley.

On Wednesday 3rd August at ASB Waterfront Theatre, we screened the Auckland Premiere of A Boy Called Piano - The Story of Fa'amoana John Luafutu directed by Nina Nawalowalo. A Q+A with director Nina Nawalowalo, Fa'amoana John Luafutu and aiga, and moderator Ole Maiava followed the screning of the film.

On Saturday 6th August at ASB Waterfront Theatre, we watched the year’s best New Zealand short films as chosen by guest selector, Florian Habicht, and then awarded the winners of four Jury Awards in front of a sold out audience. The jury of three, filmmaker and writer Tim Wong, actor Chelsie Preston-Crayford and Flicks.co.nz editor Steve Newall, selected the winner of the $7500 Flicks Best Short Film Award, the $4000 Creative New Zealand Emerging Talent Award and the $4000 Auckland Live Spirit of The Civic Award, and a Special Mention. The winners were: The Flicks Award for Best Short Film: Perianayaki. Directed by Bala Murali Shingade The Creative New Zealand Emerging Talent Award: Perianayaki. Directed by Bala Murali Shingade The Auckland Live Spirit of The Civic Award: Trees, directed by Ben Bryan and Tom Scott Perianayaki actor Jeyagowri Sivakumaran’s performance earned the Special Mention. Congratulations to the filmmakers of Perianayaki, and Trees, and their fellow finalists, Alistair MacDonald, Siobhan Marshall and Tom Furniss. The Audience Award, as voted by the public, will be awarded on the closing night of the festival in Wellington, Sunday 14 August. The winner of the audience vote takes away the Audience Award, consisting of 25 percent of the box office from NZIFF screenings in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
