Festival highlights included Centre Piece film Prime Minister, as well as new features from NZIFF stalwarts Gaylene Preston (GRACE: A Prayer for Peace) and Shirley Horrocks (Anchor Me – The Don McGlashan Story). In our two sections for competitive features, the jury declared a tie on both occasions, with My Father’s Shadow and One of Those Days When Hemme Dies taking away Best Film in the Fresh Competition, whilst Cutting Through Rocks and Endless Cookie shared the spoils in the Frames Competition. Cutting Through Rocks also won the Frames Audience Award with Peacock taking away the crowd favourite over in the Fresh Competition.
In 2025, after consultation with the festival programming team, local filmmakers and other industry stakeholders, the decision was made to combine what had previously been New Zealand’s Best Short Film Competition and Ngā Whanaunga Māori Pasifika Shorts into one wider programme: Ngā Whanaunga Aotearoa: New Zealand’s Best. By combining both programmes, we were able to elevate and strengthen the overall selection. Ira Hetaraka’s Womb took away the Umbrella Entertainment Best Short Film Award, whilst Let's Settle This by Jack Woon won the Audience award.
